From Humble Beginnings To Coaching Success

Dan Hurley: The UConn Huskies' Resurgent Leader

From humble beginnings to coaching success

Early Life and Influences

Dan Hurley was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, on January 16, 1973. He grew up surrounded by basketball, as his father, Bob Hurley Sr., was a legendary high school coach who led St. Anthony's High School to 28 state championships. Hurley's younger brother, Bobby, also became a successful coach. Hurley attended St. Anthony's High School and played point guard for his father's team. He was a talented player who helped the team win two state championships. After graduating, he played college basketball at Wagner College before transferring to Seton Hall University.

Coaching Career

After graduating from Seton Hall, Hurley began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Wagner College. He later joined the staff at Louisville under head coach Rick Pitino. In 2010, he was named head coach of Wagner College, his alma mater. After two successful seasons at Wagner, Hurley was hired as head coach of the Rhode Island Rams in 2012. He led the Rams to five consecutive postseason appearances, including three NCAA Tournament berths.

UConn Huskies Head Coach

In 2018, Hurley was named head coach of the UConn Huskies men's basketball team. The Huskies were in a rebuilding phase after a successful run under former coach Kevin Ollie. Hurley has quickly turned around the UConn program. In his first season, the Huskies finished with a 16-17 record, their best mark since 2017-18. In his second season, the Huskies improved to 20-13 and reached the semifinals of the Big East Tournament. In his third season, the Huskies continued to improve, finishing with a 23-9 record and earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. They reached the second round of the tournament before losing to eventual national champion Baylor.

Conclusion

Dan Hurley is a rising star in the coaching ranks. He has quickly turned around the UConn Huskies men's basketball program and made them a contender once again. His passion, leadership, and ability to connect with his players have made him a fan favorite in Storrs. As the Huskies continue to improve under Hurley's guidance, the future looks bright for UConn basketball.
